One of the most important things for players new to the game of Texas Hold’em is to choose which hands to play and which to fold. To become a successful poker player you have to select your starting hands with care.
The best starting hand is off course AA, but which is the worst hand? If your answer is 27 in different suits you are correct. It is the lowest possible hand that is not a pair and that can’t make a straight. The more experienced you get the more hands you can play, but in the beginning you should be very selective with the hands that you play.
Here are the ten best starting hands in Texas Hold’em:
Ace Ace - A pair of aces, also known as “pocket rockets” and “American Airlines”, this is as good as it gets.
King King - A pair of kings, or “cowboys”, the second best starting hand in Texas Hold’em.
Queen Queen - A pair of queens or "ladies" or “Siegfried & Roy”, the third best Hold’em starting hand.
Ace King suited - Popularly referred to as "big slick", the fourth best starting hand.
Jack Jack - A pair of jacks, sometimes called "hooks" or "fishhooks" is the fifth best starting hand.
Ace King off suit - The off suited little brother is also called “big slick”.
Ace Queen suited - Sometimes called "big chick" or "little slick", the suited kind is a strong starting hand.
Ten Ten - A pair of tens also called “dimes”.
Ace Jack suited - Also called "blackjack" or "ajax".
King Queen suited - Sometimes referred to as “royal marriage”.
